A quieter railway

Managing noise and vibration for better health and wellbeing

Rail transport is efficient and eco-friendly, but rising noise levels can negatively affect health and cause dissatisfaction among employees, customers, and communities. The provided information aims to help the industry address these noise and vibration issues effectively.

Assessing how rail can improve and influence the management of noise
This project was set up to identify how ground and airborne noise and vibration impacts from the railway are considered during the Town and Country planning process.
Method for calculating outdoor railway sound levels
This report outlines the intended scope, key methodologies, and future work for a new guidance document for calculation of sound levels outdoors.
Guidance for writing a noise management strategy
It is important to manage railway noise and vibration to protect the health and wellbeing of passengers, neighbours and staff. Our work (2022-SUS-024), provides resources to help identify areas of improvement and take action.
Noise Working Group
The purpose of the Noise Working Group is to lead a coherent and clear narrative on noise and vibration within the rail industry. The group will collate ideas from across the industry and influence policy, legislation, and standards.
