Passenger and Staff Assaults

Vision: Work related violence ceases to be a key risk

Public behaviour is one of the five key risk areas that the Rail Health and Safety Strategy (the Strategy) will address. Public behaviour covers trespass and suicide, passenger and staff assaults and level crossings.

Introduction

Rail workers shouldn't face violence or trauma on the job. The definition for work-related violence is: ‘Any incident, in which a person is abused, threatened or assaulted in circumstances relating to their work’.

Through data analysis and collaboration and by exploring initiatives such as environmental design and new technologies, such as body-worn cameras, industry can help protect and support frontline workers.

The Strategy is aiming for a railway where ‘work related violence ceases to be a key risk’. The strategic initiatives to address this critical risk area are listed below.

  • Strategic initiatives:
    • Evaluation of effectiveness of technology solutions.
    • Consistent post-incident support for staff.
    • Reporting and data sharing provides accurate intelligence to support decisions.
