Maximising Social Value

Creating and maximising social value

Social value can be defined by measuring the impact of activities on people and wider society’s welfare and wellbeing. As social value becomes more important, rail needs to build back better, continue to level up and deliver value add through our operations. RSSB has developed a guide to help you understand social value and the competencies needed to build and maintain our social value.

The Rail Social Value Tool (RSVT) was created by RSSB to allow rail organisations to include social value considerations when assessing investment in projects and activities. It includes a significantly larger and wider range of values. Rail stakeholders can use the RSVT to better understand how their decisions will affect the people and communities nearby.

Here we provide information available on social value to help you get started.

Social Value Topics

Sustainable Rail Blueprint
The Sustainable Rail Blueprint is the industry-wide strategy for sustainability. Learn what GB rail’s goals are for net zero carbon, as set out within the Blueprint.
The Rail Social Value Tool
The Rail Social Value Tool (RSVT) enables rail organisations to measure and track the social value of their activities, including impacts on health, safety, economy, and communities.
Collaborating to increase social value
Housing associations and the rail industry have many adjacent locations and shared areas of concern. The Social Sustainability Working Group (SSWG) commissioned a report about this. It shows how joint action can be targeted.

Communicating the Social Value of Rail
Inspired by the UN Climate Change conference (COP26) in November, RSSB is spotlighting the challenges - and opportunities - of moving to sustainable rail. In this piece we focus on rail’s social value.
Building Social Value Competence in Rail
Social value is becoming increasingly important to the rail industry as we emphasise and strengthen our role in building back better, levelling up and delivering value add through our operations. RSSB has developed a guide to help you understand social value and the competencies needed to build and maintain our social value.
Social Sustainability Working Group
The purpose of the Social Sustainability Working Group (SSWG) is to facilitate cross industry collaboration on the social sustainability agenda. This includes social impact, social performance and social value.
