Making better use of data
Our Data Sandbox provides access to sample datasets that are sourced from across the whole rail system. The outputs of five feasibility studies funded as part of RSSB's initial £500,000 ‘Data Sandbox: Improving Network Performance’ competition have shown how machine learning, graph theory and data analytics techniques can be used to make accurate predictions about the impact of reactionary delays and dwell time variations.
We have now launched a new competition, Data Sandbox+, which makes new and updated datasets available, and which is accompanied by up to £650,000 in additional funding. This can be used to support the next stage for the five existing feasibility studies or new ideas and solutions to improve train service reliability.
We are also working with the Department for Transport, Rail Delivery Group, Network Rail, Transport Systems Catapult and other industry players to support the Rail Sector Deal and Joint Rail Data Action Plan (JRDAP). These industry-wide initiatives focus on ensuring that rail travel experience around the UK is continually improving through innovation and the better use of data.
The Rail Sector Deal will transform the use of data to improve operations and customer experience by establishing a data platform to securely share rail industry data. This will enable the secure sharing of data across different modes of transport and infrastructure systems, and the development of products and services that enhance passenger experience and door-to-door travel as well as more effective movement of goods and reduced costs.
The JRDAP sets out actions that government and industry need to take address the barriers that currently inhibit data from being shared and from being open source.
If you are currently having difficulty accessing the industry data you need in order to propose new solutions do get in touch, we are happy to help facilitate this.
