Safety Risk Management

Your business will be as safe as is reasonably practicable when all your people manage risks effectively every day. An excellent safety management system coordinates people and has processes to identify and assess risks properly and control them effectively.

Our page on complying with legislation describes the legislative framework in which the rail industry operates, covering railway-specific regulations and some non-railway-specific regulations.

Common Safety Methods

Our page on common safety methods provides information on changes that have been made to Common Safety Methods as part of the European Commission's Fourth Railway Package, including possible scenarios in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

Taking Safe Decisions

Taking Safe Decisions sets out the industry consensus of how safety is taken into account when taking decisions. It describes the principles that you can apply to protect people’s safety, satisfy the law, respect the interests of stakeholders, and meet commercial objectives.

Safety Certification or Authorisation

Under ROGS, no one is able to operate vehicles or manage infrastructure on the UK railway unless they have obtained the appropriate safety certificate or authorisation. The Office of Rail and Road website provides guidance and links related to the application process.
