Taking a Human Factors Approach to Reliability and Performance

Through understanding your workforce and how often they successfully carry out certain tasks, you can have a bigger influence on job design and the support framework you provide for them.

Risk assessing human performance

Human performance is a critical element to consider in risk assessments. The rail sector relies on roles such as train drivers, signallers and maintenance staff to ensure the reliability of railway systems. The Railway Action Reliability Assessment (RARA) tool can be used to evaluate human performance and inform risk assessment. The tool is based on a user manual and a supporting calculation spreadsheet which can be provided to members upon request. The RSSB human factors team also offer human reliability assessment training - please contact Huw Gibson for further information.

Using human factors to improve train maintenance

Anecdotal evidence suggests that rail vehicle maintenance has received less human factors input in comparison with other sectors (such as aviation) or other areas of railway safety. The RSSB human factors in train maintenance toolkit provides practical, effective, human factors guidance to support train maintenance activities.
