A signal passed at danger – or SPAD – occurs when a train goes past a red signal without authority.

All Signals Passed at Danger (SPADs) are recorded within the Safety Management Information System (SMIS) and have historically been assigned a SPAD Risk Ranking based on the actual circumstances of the SPAD.

What is the SPAD Risk Ranking Tool?

All Signals Passed at Danger (SPADs) are recorded within the Safety Management Information System (SMIS) and have historically been assigned a SPAD Risk Ranking based on the actual circumstances of the SPAD.

The outputs from the SPAD Risk Ranking Tool can be used to give an indication of how the level of national SPAD risk is varying over time and enables the industry performance to be measured in terms of a percentage change year on year. Additionally, the outputs from the SPAD Risk Ranking Tool can be used more broadly to inform the SPAD investigation process.
