SMIS Business Intelligence for Company Reports and Analysis
SMIS is the central safety reporting system used by the GB mainline railway.The information contained within SMIS is available to all our members to enable them to analyse their own company and industry-wide safety data. RSSB provides support to help companies do this.
RSSB gives all members access to SMIS data via Jaspersoft.
Jaspersoft is used to query, design and schedule reports using data held in the SMIS data warehouse. It cannot change any of the data held there.
Jaspersoft can be used to pull ad-hoc data on a topic of interest. For example, all incidents that have occurred at a particular location or all company workforce injuries in a given period.
This is achieved by selecting the most appropriate data domain, applying the relevant filters, and specifying the fields to be brought back. The output can be either as a table of events or as a count of relevant events per unit of time. These outputs can then be turned into charts ready to include in safety performance reports.
For regular reporting, once a report has been designed its run can be scheduled. It can then provide the data used for KPI reporting, for example, every four weeks or every month.
We have unlimited accounts in Jaspersoft and these can be provided to members who are not SMIS inputters to view the resulting business intelligence.
In addition, RSSB can prepare individual, bespoke company dashboards that report on live SMIS data. An example is shown below of one prepared for Abellio group. Some organisations use these in place of, or to support, their reports, choosing to call up the live dashboard in meetings. The interactive nature enables views of the events that populate each time period, and can drill down to the individual SMIS entry.
Review of the data at this level of detail, can quickly identify errors and omissions. Ultimately this should lead to better data quality.
