Cross-industry research and innovation play key roles in developing the knowledge, technologies and operational solutions that individual players in the rail system could not pursue in isolation. Research, analysis and insight delivered by RSSB help industry to tackle the issues of today and enable the railway of the future to be better, safer and more sustainable.

One of the RSSB's strategic objectives is to embed sustainable development principles into the rail industry and we do this by facilitating the development of cross-industry strategies, including Air Quality, Vegetation Management and Decarbonisation. We also work to develop tools and resources, including our self-assessment tool designed to support members in maturing their sustainability strategies and processes. Through facilitating cross-industry groups and forums, undertaking research projects and promoting case studies we are continually working to spread best practice across the industry.
