Safety intelligence

We support the rail industry to make the GB rail network the safest and most efficient in Europe.  We help those operating the railway to understand, manage and reduce safety risk.  We do this by:

  • Collecting and analysing the data
  • Modelling risk
  • Providing guidance and information to inform decisions
  • Encouraging collaboration to mitigate risk

Marshalling the data for the whole railway in one system means that data is consistent and can be shared.  Our members can use the information in the Safety Management Information System (SMIS) to analyse risk, predict trends and focus activities on major areas of safety concern.

SMIS is also a valuable data source for RSSB itself and the cross-industry groups we manage, as the data can inform the development of shared solutions including standards, research, systems and schemes.

We produce regular safety performance reports summarising some of the key data and trends on a monthly, half-yearly and annual basis.

We also produce a range of reports and outputs to support learning from operational experience, capturing and sharing the knowledge gained from accident and incident investigations on GB rail, overseas railways and other industries.
