Technical Note: Driver-Controlled Operation and Driver-Only Operation On-Train Camera Monitoring Systems, TN112 issue 1
Watch the December 2023 standards quarterly webinar
Technical notes are documents produced by RSSB to help with the application of standards, guidance or legislation about a particular topic. These are non-binding documents which do not change existing requirements or guidance so do not change the application of current standards or legislation.
The associated documents are:
RIS-3703-TOM Iss 5 - Passenger Train Dispatch and Platform Safety Measures
RIS-3437-TOM Iss 3 - Defective On-Train Equipment
GERT8000-SS1 Iss 9 - Station duties and train dispatch
GERT8000-TW5 Iss 12 - Preparation and movement of trains: Defective or isolated vehicles and on-train equipment.
-
Why has TN112 been produced? This technical note has been produced following requests from the industry for additional guidance on the design and operation of Driver Controlled Operation (DCO) and Driver-Only Operation (DOO) on train camera monitoring systems.
-
What is the purpose of TN112?
This technical note aims to help the GB rail industry in the design and operation of on-train camera monitoring systems. The design and performance of on-train camera monitoring systems may impact the safe and effective operation of a vehicle. This may result in vehicles:
- being withdrawn from service in case of inclement weather, such as snow and ice,
- requiring additional technical or operational support, or an unusual mode of operation.
This technical note provides guidance on how the dispatch process for DCO and DOO vehicles is performed with reference to the appropriate Rule Book modules and standards. In addition, guidance is provided on the design trade-offs of DCO and DOO systems and considerations that may be given to their availability and reliability .
-
Why is TN112 important?TN112 is important as it supports optimum DCO and DOO system design, vehicle maintenance, and the operation of DCO and DOO systems, by providing information about good system availability and performance.
-
Who needs to know about TN112?
Rolling stock manufacturers and suppliers, rolling stock owning companies (ROSCOs), and entities in charge of maintenance (ECMs) will benefit from this technical note, by using the content relating to system design, availability, and performance.
Railway undertakings (RUs) will benefit from this technical note through an improved understanding of the dispatch process for DCO and DOO trains as well as maintenance activities to prevent the impact of inclement weather.
