Where Do We Use Standards?

Introduction

Whether it’s levelling up communities with better rail links, reducing carbon with hydrogen-powered trains, or improving the efficiency of rail for passengers, freight customers and taxpayers, Standards are here to help.

There are many types of standards used in the rail industry today, all with varying levels of applicability.

Control, command and signalling
Information on the on-board and trackside structures and equipment designed to ensure the safe operation and movement of trains, directing rail traffic, and keeping trains clear of each other.
Data, Systems and Telematics
The rail industry relies on the generation, transmission and use of data for safe and efficient operation. As rail adds more digital technology, this reliance, and cross-system dependence, will increase.
Energy
Read about the rules and procedures which relate to the power supplied to move trains along the track. The management of how the various types of energy used on the railways will work in practice is a key issue for standards.
Infrastructure
Information on the rules and procedures which relate to all physical aspects of stations, depots and yards.
Plant
Information on the rules and procedures which cover portable or transportable machinery or vehicle used for maintenance and inspection of track, structures, track formation, and fixed electric traction equipment.
Rolling stock
Introduction to the rules and procedures covering the different types of vehicles used to operate services or maintain the track. The majority of these are units, carriages and locomotives for passenger services, as well as wagons and locomotives for freight.
Traffic Operation and Management
Information on the rules and procedures required to enable a coherent operation of the different parts of the railway such as rolling stock, energy, plant, infrastructure, and control command signalling.
