RSSB’s DECARB programme covers three key areas. Traction, Infrastructure and Governance. There is more information provided on the work we have done on these areas in the pages linked to below.
Traction
Information on how passenger and freight trains are powered. Traction is the single biggest source of carbon; and the part of the industry where the greatest change is possible within the 2040 target date.
The section looks at the opportunities to reduce carbon through changes to the infrastructure upon which rail operates with targeted deployment of battery and hydrogen technology.
The Traction Decarbonisation Network Strategy - Interim Programme Business Case sets out options to deliver the most cost-effective combination of electrification, hydrogen and battery operation across the GB rail network.
