Enhancing system safety: the challenge of the Sandilands tram accident

Featured story
RSSB Director of System Safety and Health, George Bearfield, gave a lecture on enhancing system safety yesterday, 19 April 2018, in his role as visiting Professor of Railway System Safety at the University of Huddersfield Institute of Railway Research.

Offering his experience of how the mainline railway in Great Britain responded to challenges following the train collision at Ladbroke Grove and other accidents, George discussed how the response to the Sandilands tram accident can be faced strategically and in a way which effectively drives the culture change needed.

The Institute of Railway Research is a world leading centre in the field of railway engineering and risk. The lecture was attended in person and remotely via weblink by stakeholders from the tram and rail sectors as well as staff and students from the university, and was followed by a question and answer session.
