In 2018, RSSB presented conclusive findings that the enhanced sander configuration known as DVRS halves stopping distances in low adhesion compared to current fixed rate sanders.  Work then followed to retrofit West Midland Trains’ 323 classes running on the Birmingham Cross-City line and we successfully piloted the first-in-industry DVRS fitted trains running in passenger service. The pilot confirmed braking performance improvements and provided a path for other operators to retrofit DVRS to other fleets.
