What Does a Route Story Look Like?

Route stories are introduced in the updated 'RIS-3702-TOM Rail Industry Standard for Management of Route Knowledge for Drivers, Train Managers, Guards and Driver Managers'. Creating a route story is a good way of completing the route risk assessment. You may find this information useful if you are responsible for carrying out route risk assessments.

A route story is a list of everything a learner needs to know about a route, written in the order they will encounter it. It defines route knowledge requirements for a specific route by drawing together a sequential list of route cues and detailing what the learner needs to know about each one (see example route story resources below). As different organisations take different approaches to route learning, some may find the new approach to be a big change, whilst others will only need to make a small change.
