The Platform Aerodynamic Risk Assessment Tool assists users in carrying out a platform aerodynamic risk assessment.

What is PARAT?

By entering site-specific data into the Platform Aerodynamic Risk Assessment Tool, the user can carry out a platform aerodynamic risk assessment and record the unmitigated risk due to the aerodynamic risk of passing trains, along with recording the decision taking process on which mitigation measures should be implemented. The Tool supports guidance note GIGN7616 Guidance on Interface between Station Platforms, Track and Trains and is designed to be used to apply the risk assessment method described in Appendix G.

What is covered by the PARAT?

The method can be used to assess risk due to the aerodynamic risk of passing trains under current platform conditions over a typical busy weekday, but may also be useful to assess other scenarios, when required, such as:

  1. Proposed changes to the use of a platform, or passing train traffic patterns.
  2. Temporary changes to traffic levels, which might result in a short-term increase in aerodynamic risk, for example, due to infrastructure works or possession activities.
  3. Considering off-peak, peak times, or short-term busy periods (such as special events).

The Mitigation Measures Review section allows the assessor to consider and record details of which mitigation measures should be considered for possible implementation, as suggested by the category of unmitigated risk identified by the risk assessment.
