Q: What is Safe Insights?
A: Safe Insights is a new, cutting-edge safety management system we’ve developed to replace the Safety Management Intelligence System (SMIS) in March 2025. It will enable members to collect and share safety information more efficiently and effectively and provide more powerful insights.
Q: Why is SMIS being replaced?
A: The decision to update the system is a direct response to user feedback and experience. Safe Insights is being developed to address longstanding challenges and better meet the evolving needs of the rail industry. It allows for greater responsiveness and tailored improvements.
Q: Why a new system was developed instead of selecting a third-party solution?
A: We carefully evaluated various options and determined that developing and hosting our own solution would provide greater control, flexibility, and the ability to tailor the system specifically to the needs of the rail industry.
Q: Who was involved in the development of Safe Insights?
A: The development involved thorough industry consultation at every stage. We are grateful for the support of our dedicated groups and members, including the SMIS Advisory Group, SMIS User Group, SMIS News,
SMIS Focus Group, and SMIS surgery drop-in attendees.
Q: What are the key benefits of Safe Insights?
- Data quality. Safe Insights identifies potential issues and recommends corrections as users enter safety records, resolving ambiguity and omissions for improved data quality. AI-powered suggestions and categorizations in real-time further reduce manual checks and enhance accuracy.
- Time saving. Streamlined interfaces, automated data entry options, and the AI assistant Rio will significantly reduce the time spent on data entry and analysis.
- AI-powered: The AI companion, Rio, will assist users by recommending categories, pre-populating information, and tailoring questions. This will save time and clicks, and Rio's functionality will expand over time.
Q: Will the transition from SMIS to Safe Insights be difficult?
A: We understand that system changes can be challenging. We are prioritizing a smooth and beneficial transition and will provide training and support to all users. The interface will look similar to SMIS to aid in the transition.
Q: When will Safe Insights be available?
A: The full release of Safe Insights is planned for 2025. A pilot program is currently underway with select organizations.
