Cutting costs and simplifying route planning with the new Route Availability Calculator

Featured story
The Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) is excited to announce the launch of a groundbreaking Route Availability (RA) Calculator. This free online tool is designed to streamline and simplify route planning for the entire GB rail industry.

Streamlining a complex process

For years, the rail industry has struggled with time-consuming and complex calculations to assess vehicle compatibility with bridges. The new calculator will simplify the process of determining a vehicle’s RA number.

Easy access and implementation

The RA calculator is accessible through the RSSB website. Users simply need to input their axle distances and axle loads. The calculator then determines the vehicle’s RA number. This number can then be compared with the RA numbers of route sections or bridges to determine a vehicle’s suitability for that route.

Benefits for the industry

‘This new calculator is quick and easy to use and will become the single source of vehicle route availability calculations for the GB rail industry.’ – Neil Dinmore, Professional Head of Plant at RSSB.
