RSSB makes train driver recruitment process more efficient and effective
On 7th December we released our latest tranche of new and updated standards. This includes an update to RIS-3751-TOM which is about psychometric assessments used in train driver selection.
Potential train drivers undergo a psychometric assessment to check that they are occupationally psychologically fit for the role. We have updated the relevant standard following feedback that the guidance was inconsistent and out of step with current good practice.
This update will enable the industry to use a more efficient and effective psychometric assessment process that is easier to follow, while also helping to reduce the time required to undertake certain parts of the assessments.
Ensuring that this process is robust ensures that employers can recruit drivers who are psychologically fit for the role. It increases the number of available attempts a candidate can make and clarifies the validity of these tests. This not only saves time and energy on the part of the recruiter but may enhance the train driver recruitment process by making it more attractive to potential candidates.
Tom Lee, RSSB’s Director of Standards, said:
“Train drivers make a vital contribution to ensuring that our railway continues to be safe. Having robust arrangements for the selection of drivers is important. These changes make the process clearer and more efficient, maintaining safety and reducing cost.”
