Making Better Use of Data
The Data Sandbox+ research competition built on the success of RSSB’s original ‘Data Sandbox’ initiative, launched in 2017. Data Sandbox funded five feasibility studies to show how data can be used in novel ways to support performance improvements.
In 2019, Data Sandbox+ made £1.3m available to fund demonstrator projects building on the original work, or further feasibility studies proposing new approaches and ideas. Seven projects are currently underway.
Rail Sector Deal and Joint Rail Data Action Plan
We are working with the Department for Transport, Rail Delivery Group, Network Rail, and other industry players to support the Rail Sector Deal and the Joint Rail Data Action Plan (JRDAP). These industry-wide initiatives focus on ensuring that the experience of rail travel around the UK continues to improve through innovation and the better use of data.
The Rail Sector Deal will establish a means of sharing rail industry data securely. This will allow data to be used to develop products and services that enhance the passenger experience and door-to-door travel. It will also achieve more effective movement of goods and reduced operational costs.
The JRDAP sets out how government and industry can address the barriers that currently prevent data from being shared, either openly or under agreed licence conditions.
