Highlights from Period 1 (1 April to 26 April 2025)

Taking Safe Decisions workshop

Members of RSI led a workshop for Network Rail’s geotechnics team in York. They explored how to embed the Taking Safe Decisions (TSD) good practice principles to their processes to implement safe, cost-effective solutions. RSI also discussed the new Taking Safe Decisions (TSD) e-learning course.

Safe Insights User Group meeting

The cross industry Safe Insights User Group met on the 17 April.  The meeting was well attended by 21 companies across the industry.  The chair discussed recent fixes and improvements and plans for the Safe Insights reporting tool’s new features (cause section and transfer of event ownership). Members provided feedback on proposals for a combined scoring metric for data quality, ideas for common reports in Power BI, the plan for training and suggestions for guidance to support data entry in the new system.

‘It was really helpful to see what the Safe Insights team has been up to and what the aim of the new system is. It was also really useful for having other users present; they raised some ideas that I had not thought of.’ - Anonymous, Safe Insights User Group attendee

Northam Traincare Facility visit

RSI members and other RSSB colleagues visited Siemens at the Northam Traincare Facility in Southampton, the principal maintenance facility for SWR’s Class 444 and 450s. Andy Healey (Fleet Delivery Manager) and Stephen Jackson (Fleet performance manager) hosted the visit. The group toured the facility, viewing a wheel lathe and below a train stationed inside one of the maintenance buildings. It was useful to see the depot ahead of the human factors awareness training that RSSB will deliver to Siemens in July.

Cost-benefit Analysis Tool update

RSI led a session with ORR delegates on the updates to RSSB’s safety-related cost-benefit analysis guidance and analytical tool. Attendees were actively engaged, providing feedback on their requirements. We will collaborate closely with ORR to ensure our updated guidance incorporates relevant elements from its now-withdrawn internal guidance and becomes the industry’s go-to resource for safety-related cost-benefit analysis.

Project for Southeastern

Members of RSSB’s System Safety and Health department conducted a review of Southeastern’s work-related violence (WRV) data to support internal reviews of conflict management and WRV policies. The report shared with Southeastern included an in-depth review of Southeastern’s safety data, employee practices, training and policy.

Avanti West Coast’ Annual Safety Conference

RSI delivered a presentation at Avanti West Coast’s Annual Safety Conference in Birmingham, which by Avanti employees and external stakeholders. RSI's presentation covered the rail industry's Health and Safety Strategy, with closer aspects that are of particular interest to Avanti. This included details of both Safe Insights and Health Insights.

Safe Insights Application Programming Interface

Freightliner has become the latest operator to make use of our Safe Insights application programming interface (API) to automatically transfer data from their company system. Now, following an RSI final data quality check, they no longer need to ‘double enter’ personal accidents, assaults and public behaviour issues. This migration exemplifies excellent teamwork across RSSB and member organisations.
