Effective Business Writing Training
Course overview
Clear and accessible written communication is vital in safety-critical industries. It ensures accurate information transfer, reduces the risk of errors, and promotes a strong safety culture. This course shares good practice to enable rail professionals to produce high-quality business documents that meet user needs. It covers the techniques and processes that have been developed by RSSB to write effective requirements, rationales, and guidance, using plain language.

Learning outcomes
- Analyse the need for a document and the audience’s requirements.
- Identify the purpose of the document and apply critical thinking to determine the approach you will use to produce it.
- Recognise the different stages of developing documents and your role within those stages.
- Identify the methods by which changes to documents can be initiated.
- Explain what factors should be considered when gathering insights to develop documents.
- Distinguish the different types of audience and how they may use the documents.
- Use house style and good practice principles to write documents uniformly, irrespective of their content, so they are clear and user-centred.
- Discuss issues faced when developing documents and share good practice on how to overcome these.

Barbara Smith, Principal Rail Operations Specialist, RSSBBarbara has more than 30 years’ rail experience. In her Rail Operations role, she writes industry standards on various topics. She also holds a CIPD Diploma in Learning and Development Practice and more than 13 years’ experience developing and delivering training in safety-critical settings.

Laura Fernandez, Principal Rail Operations Specialist, RSSBLaura has worked in the rail industry for nearly 20 years. She oversees the Rail Industry Standards portfolio for Traffic Operation and Management and the creation of standards for the Operations team. Since joining RSSB, she has delivered RSSB courses to several rail organisations, integrating her operational experience and knowledge.
