Fatigue Risk Management Training
Course overview
Managing fatigue risk effectively is crucial for ensuring rail safety, compliance, and workforce well-being. This training provides a comprehensive understanding of fatigue risks in the rail industry, equipping participants with the knowledge and tools needed to identify, assess, and mitigate fatigue risks.
Regulatory direction and issues as per the ORR’s guidance are discussed as part of the course, though the Network Rail fatigue standard is currently under review and is not included. Basic fatigue education and sleep hygiene topics are not covered in this course, though more comprehensive fatigue science is discussed.

Anna Vereker, Principal Human Factors Specialist, RSSB
Anna has a BA in English and Psychology and an MA in Psychology. She is Chartered as an Occupational Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council and is an Associate Fellow of the BPS. Anna is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors as well as the European Association for Aviation Psychology. In addition, she holds several BPS psychometric and European Certificate in Psychology qualifications.
Anna has worked in a range of military and civilian psychology and human factors roles for 20 years. Most of these have been in aviation. She has developed and delivered a wide variety of training courses during her career. These have covered a broad spectrum of human factors topics. Anna currently delivers several courses for RSSB.

Dr. Claire Watt-Coombes, Senior Human Factors Specialist, RSSB
Claire has an academic background in psychology (BSc), cognitive science (MSc), and fatigue science (PhD). She is also a member of the British Psychological Society (BPS). With over a decade of experience in human factors and frontline research across a wide range of topics, Claire has worked across the health, commercial aviation, and rail sectors.
Claire’s PhD research focused on fatigue assessment in commercial aviation, and her specialist interests include shift work, sleep, cognition, and fatigue in safety-critical industries. She developed the training materials for this course and also delivers training on human factors in accident analysis and prevention.
