Hydrogen Policy and Standards Review
13/05/2024
Rail should consider hydrogen as a traction fuel for some parts of the decarbonised rail network because it offers a zero-carbon alternative to diesel in areas where electrification is not feasible or cost-effective.
Knowledge and expertise about hydrogen use in rail is limited due to its novelty and the specific challenges it presents for the industry. While hydrogen offers a decarbonisation pathway, its implementation requires addressing safety concerns, developing new infrastructure, and understanding its unique characteristics.
The Hydrogen Policy and Standards Review covers the adequacy of existing standards to manage the risks associated with hydrogen systems. It also clarifies the responsibilities of various parties involved in the deployment of hydrogen trains. It is the first report from standards project 22-007 ‘Review of the risks associated with hydrogen fuelled rolling stock’.
