Overspeed Group

04/03/2024
The cross-industry Overspeed Group (OSG) improves the management and understanding of overspeed risk. They do this through the use and improved application of technology, operational processes, and competence. It is responsible for the production of an industry-wide strategy to improve the management of trains overspeeding. It is also responsible for the work on blanket speed restrictions as part of the Laurencekirk to Portlethen RAIB recommendation 2.
“OSG’s role is to better understand of the system risks associated with trains overspeeding. We work collaboratively to develop and implement improvements to management controls.”
Paul Ashton, Network Rail - Chair of the Overspeed Group
Paul Ashton, Chair

Scope

The OSG acts as the industry focal point and lead for improving overspeed management. The group is required to:

  • improve speed restriction management
  • lead of the use and application of technologies to reduce overspeeding risk
  • improve the understanding of overspeeding risk
  • improve overspeeding data
  • sponsor or contribute to research and development projects.

The progress we’re making

Overspeed risk

To enhance industry’s understanding of overspeed risk, the Overspeed Subgroup is continually improving data and industry collaboration. As part of this, we have created an overspeed bowtie and datapack.

The group continues to improve the data pack for the group as well as the blanket speed restriction process arising from the RAIB report on trains overspeeding between Laurencekirk and Portlethen.

We’ve produced a report about the issues involved in the use of late notices to give drivers information about speed restrictions, and the most effective way to use them.

Last updated: 01/03/2024. Read our latest train operations safety performance overview for more on how we are enhancing the safety of train operations.
