Sustainable Rail Executive
Scope
SRE is the industry’s committee which:
- Drives forward the development of an ambitious, affordable and coherent sustainability blueprint to make rail the leading mode of sustainable transport.
- Co-ordinates policy and industry responses to sustainability challenges, influencing governments to weigh investment choices in rail against sustainability outcomes in other modes.
- Collates and reports the combined efforts of the industry into a single, understandable view.
- Reviews industry’s progress and provides challenge where it is needed, holding duty holders to account.
- Assesses sustainability funding and identifies shortfalls, impressing upon funders the need for further support.
Rail Leader Update – Sustainability
Making rail greener will be no easy feat. Though our industry is already at a distinct advantage—with rail being the most eco-friendly mode of long-distance transport—obstacles aplenty stand before us. But when we team up with cross-industry working groups and other rail organisations, we take steps—both big and small—towards an even greener railway. A case in point is our work to improve air quality. It’s also shown in the benefits the Rail Social Value Tool is bringing to industry.
Watch our two-minute video update for an overview of this work and other projects under way.
Subgroups
Sustainable Rail Leadership Group
The purpose of the Sustainable Rail Leadership Group (SRLG) is to enable the rail industry to deliver a more sustainable railway efficiently and effectively through adoption of the Rail Sustainable Rail Blueprint.
Subgroups of the Sustainable Rail Leadership Group
-
Air Quality Working GroupThe Air Quality Working Group (AQWG) is a specialist group reporting to the Sustainable Rail Leadership Group (SRLG). This working group facilitates industry collaboration on the development and delivery of UK rail’s strategic framework to meet its air quality ambitions.
-
Climate Change Adaptation Working GroupThe purpose of the Climate Change Adaptation Working Group (CCAWG) is to lead and define a collaborative industry approach to weather resilience and climate change.
-
Decarb Working GroupThe purpose of the Decarb Working Group (DWG) is to lead, oversee and guide the industry in contributing to the government’s net-zero emissions target by 2050. The group will also define the strategic approach for the rail industry.
-
Infrastructure Carbon Working GroupThe Infrastructure Carbon Working Group (ICWG) has been set up to deliver the net zero carbon rail element of the Sustainable Rail Blueprint (SRB). The group has a particular focus on two of the SRB’s strategic aims: net zero assets and net zero value chain.
-
Modern Slavery Solution Sharing GroupThe Modern Slavery Solution Sharing Group (MSSSG) facilitates cross-industry collaboration in managing modern slavery risks on the railway. The group is accountable to the Social Sustainability Working Group (SSWG).
-
Natural Value Working GroupThe purpose of the Natural Value Working Group (NVWG) is to lead and define a strategic approach on the role of natural value and biodiversity in relation to the rail industry.
-
Noise Working GroupThe purpose of the Noise Working Group (NWG) is to lead a coherent and clear narrative on noise and vibration within the rail industry. The group will collate ideas from across the industry and influence policy, legislation, and standards.
-
Rail Environment ForumThe Rail Environment Forum (REF) is the expert group leading on environmental issues relating to passengers, railway stations and freight operators in Great Britain. The forum aims to enable the rail industry, to effectively manage environmental risk, reduce all negative environmental impacts while enhancing positive environmental impacts.
-
Rail Social Value Tool Steering GroupThe Rail Social Value Tool Steering Group (RSVT SG) brings together key users of the Rail Social Value Tool (RSVT) to provide a governance function for the RSVT and to inform and guide the ongoing development of the tool. The RSVT enables rail organisations to forecast, monitor and evaluate the data they collect relating to social value.
-
Sustainable Rail Blueprint Working GroupThe aim of the Sustainable Rail Blueprint Working Group (SRBWG) is to facilitate collaboration and align the industry’s aims and objectives to establish an affordable and coherent sustainability strategy. The group will also provide the sustainability expertise required for the Long-Term Strategy for Rail (LTSfR).
-
Social Sustainability Working GroupThe purpose of the Social Sustainability Working Group (SSWG) is to facilitate cross industry collaboration on the social sustainability agenda. This includes social impact, social performance and social value.
