Becoming a Member - GB and Overseas

06/02/2025
The railway is a complex, interconnected system. At RSSB, we bring diverse organisations together to make collective decisions that drive positive change. With a growing global reputation, our expertise is sought after worldwide. Whether you're based in the UK or overseas, our membership and affiliate programs offer the services and expertise to support your responsible growth.
  • Why join RSSB?

Through research, standards, and analysis, we empower our members to deliver a safer, smarter railway. We provide invaluable support across a wide range of industry topics, offering knowledge, independence, and a consistent point of reference in a dynamic environment.

As technical experts, we provide informed, objective insights. We see both the big picture and the crucial details, equipping the industry with the information and tools needed for continuous improvement across the whole system.

Owned by the industry and operating as a non-profit, we are independent of commercial interests. Our membership spans the entire rail system, including infrastructure companies, passenger and freight train operators, rolling stock owners, and suppliers.

  • Who can join?
Any company involved in operating or supporting the railway system in Great Britain is welcome to become an RSSB member.
  • Addressing industry challenges together

The rail industry faces significant challenges. Growth in passenger and freight traffic tests our railways to achieve and maintain higher performance under pressure. Also the need to improve customer satisfaction, reduce costs, and lower carbon emissions.

In such a connected system, working in isolation is not an option. RSSB provides a platform for collaboration, enabling you to shape solutions to shared challenges and benefit from the resulting efficiencies.

  • The value of RSSB membership

RSSB embodies the common purpose and shared strategic outlook of the British rail sector. We focus on issues that are best addressed collectively, impacting multiple organizations or requiring a unified approach. Many rail organisations also have a legal duty to cooperate on safety. RSSB membership demonstrates this public commitment to the rail industry, fulfilling this duty.

Membership offers the opportunity to recognise the scale of industry challenges and invest in collaboration and teamwork, ultimately benefiting your company, stakeholders, and customers.

Learn about the benefits of RSSB membership in Our Membership Benefits page.

  • A show of commitment and legal duty to cooperate

The Railways and Other Guided Transport Systems (Safety) Regulations, 2006 (ROGS) has two specific regulations that require duty holders to cooperate - Regulation 22 - Co-operation, and Regulation 26 - Co-operation requirements for safety critical work.

This applies to transport undertakings, infrastructure managers, and those who are required to have a safety management system. This includes operators without safety certificates or authorisations, and also contractors. The goal is to ensure rail safety, requiring operators to facilitate compliance with ROGS for others.

This includes adhering to safety management system and risk assessment requirements.
