Use case: Assessing risk at the platform-train interface
To manage PTI risk, duty holders must assess the risk at their platforms. RSSB’s PTI Risk Assessment Tool brings consistency to the risk assessment process and helps operators follow good practice from Rail Industry Standard RIS-3703-TOM.
How is Safe Insights data being used?
To conduct a good risk assessment, assessors need to understand each platform, what happens there, and what could go wrong. Safe Insights data reveals accidents and incidents that have happened on platforms previously. This crucial information can prompt both updates to risk assessments and remedial action to prevent repeat occurrences.
What difference is the data making?
This data is available to users within the RSSB PTI Risk Assessment Tool when they begin an assessment at a station. It tells the assessor at which platform the accident or incident occurred and explains what happened. These incidents can help to focus the risk assessment. For example, an assessor may be responding to a staff member attempting to dispatch against a red signal or someone tripping over a step as they board a train.
Providing this data within the tool saves the assessor time and provides a consistent, high-quality safety event information to inform platform assessments. Data used and generated by the PTI Risk Assessment Tool is stored in a central location, which can support wider learning and good practice sharing.
