Scope

The scope of the IPTWG subgroup includes all areas related to on-board independent power sources, including but not limited to:

  • The ongoing development of existing diesel-powered or multi-mode fleets (such as efficiency improvements, exhaust emissions and treatment, fuel standards, additives, legislation, etc.),
  • The development and introduction of alternative independent power systems (including energy-storage systems) to the rail network,
  • The integration of independently powered traction into rolling stock,
  • The integration of independently powered traction with network and depot infrastructure,
  • The operation and maintenance of rolling stock equipped with independently powered traction.

The scope of the IPTWG does not cover fire-prevention and mitigation associated with independently powered traction.

Membership

IPTWG shall collectively provide expertise and strategic knowledge in the following areas:

  • Rolling stock traction system design and maintenance
  • Power systems using alternative energy sources / fuels
  • Passenger train operation 
  • Freight train operation
  • Current and future legislation and environmental impact concerning diesel and alternative fuels
