Infrastructure Carbon Working Group
08/02/2024
The Infrastructure Carbon Working Group (ICWG) has been set up to deliver the net zero carbon rail element of the Sustainable Rail Blueprint (SRB). The group has a particular focus on two of the SRB’s strategic aims: net zero assets and net zero value chain.
"The ICWG brings together cross-industry expertise to work towards a common goal of decarbonising rail infrastructure management and projects. The group shares best practices in low-carbon solutions and contractual improvements, aimed at incentivising carbon reduction. It also aims to make carbon data management more accessible to everyone. Climate change remains the most significant threat to the world, as such our collective efforts are focused on driving the rail industry towards achieving the carbon targets outlined in the Sustainable Rail Blueprint."
Scope
The purpose of the ICWG is to:
- facilitate a consistent approach to assessing, managing, and reducing infrastructure carbon across rail.
- ensure industry-level work on decarbonisation informs, and is informed by, both wider sustainability strategy and wider infrastructure decarbonisation.
- provide an expert forum to discuss and advise on key issues concerning rail industry infrastructure decarbonisation.
Membership
The ICWG has members representing the following industry categories:
- passenger train operating companies
- freight operating companies
- infrastructure managers, including Network Rail
- rolling stock owning companies
- supply chain including rolling stock manufacturers and infrastructure contractors
- Department for Transport
- Transport Scotland
- Transport for Wales
- Office of Rail and Road (ORR)
