Wheel Impact Load Detector Working Group (WILD WG)
15/01/2025
The Wheel Impact Load Detector Working Group (WILD WG) exists to enable industry to make better use of existing data streams available from the WILD system and to continually improve processes. This will help identify potentially faulty freight wagons or damaged wheels that could create derailment risk or damage the track. Additionally, improved data analytics to predict degradation and support better maintenance decisions for passenger and freight vehicles will enable efficiencies in industry.
'WILD WG will enable industry to make better use of the data streams available from the Wheel Impact Load Detector system. It will monitor the availability and reliability of the system, optimise the use of data for identifying potential safety issues, and enable efficiencies through predictive analysis and better maintenance practices.'
Scope
WILD WG will specifically focus on WILD data and will review emerging trends from this data. Topics of focus include:
- business as usual (e.g., RFID tagging > deployment of future WILD sites > issues with current WILD sites/data transfer)
- improved use of WILD data for detection of vehicle performance
- identification of research needs and review of research outputs relevant to WILD systems
- feedback from WILD users, success stories, and issues from data and tools.
The group will set priorities on the development of the proposed WILD tool and any improvements to it. It will also provide feedback to system suppliers and Network Rail on data outputs. This will include communication and future WILD deployment strategy.
Membership
WILD WG has members representing these industry stakeholders:
- passenger railway undertakings
- suppliers
- freight operators
- Network Rail and other infrastructure managers
- academia
- RSSB.
