Non-Technical Skills for Non-Driver Roles
The suite of learning materials provided here are for the following safety critical roles:
- Dispatch staff
- Fitters and engineers
- Train controllers
- Guards (on-train staff)
- Shunters
The learning material is specific to each role and can be integrated into formal NTS training programmes or used in isolation as part of refresher days and routine safety briefings.
For each role, four operational tasks were identified on which to base the learning materials. These are not necessarily safety critical tasks, but rather tasks commonly undertaken and suitable for basing the learning materials around.
The materials can be used as part of training and refresher training, safety days, engagement days, safety briefs and/or any other suitable learning and development activity.
Dispatch Staff
The learning materials draw on the principles of blended learning and consist of videos, scenario cards, animations and in some cases games or puzzles. For each task, the objective has been provided together with tips to support the facilitator.
For dispatchers, NTS learning materials have been developed for the following four tasks:
- Video: Safely dispatch trains during times of low workload
- Video: Respond to an emergency platform event
- Scenario Cards: Help a person with reduced mobility pre-dispatch
- Scenario Cards: Dispatch trains during disruptions and high workload
Fitters and Engineers
The learning materials draw on the principles of blended learning and consist of videos, scenario cards, animations and in some cases games or puzzles. For each task, the objective has been provided together with tips to support the facilitator.
For fitters and engineers, NTS learning materials have been developed for the following four tasks:
- Video: Apply correct safety conditions before starting train maintenance
- Scenario Cards: Check HVAC panel is correctly attached
- Scenario Cards: Identify a fault during routine inspection
- Game-based activity cards: Manage a reported fault on a vehicle brought out of service
Train Controllers
The learning materials draw on the principles of blended learning and consist of videos, scenario cards, animations and in some cases games or puzzles. For each task, the objective has been provided together with tips to support the facilitator.
For train running controllers, NTS learning materials have been developed for the following four tasks:
- Video: Train running controllers animated scenario
- Video: Respond to an emergency platform event
- Video: Safely dispatch trains during times of low workload
- Case Study: Hudson River Crash
Guards (on-train staff)
The learning materials draw on the principles of blended learning and consist of videos, scenario cards, animations and in some cases games or puzzles. For each task, the objective has been provided together with tips to support the facilitator.
For guards, NTS learning materials have been developed for the following tasks:
- Scenario Cards: Complete checks before completion of your dispatch duties
- What if Cards: Complete checks before completion of your dispatch duties
- Scenario Cards: Identify and report any unusual occurrences
- Video: Undertake customer service duties
- Scenario Cards: Communicate in the event of an emergency situation
Shunters
The learning materials draw on the principles of blended learning and consist of videos, scenario cards, animations and in some cases games or puzzles. For each task, the objective has been provided together with tips to support the facilitator.
For shunters, NTS learning materials have been developed for the following four tasks:
- Video: Check the train is marshalled examined correctly
- Video: Communicate shunt move instructions to driver and signaller
- Video: Move between vehicles to couple or uncouple
- Video: Set correct route for the train using ground frame or points
