Improving Safety, Health & Wellbeing

Introduction

The pages linked from here will help you and your organisation to understand and manage risks, and to develop and continuously improve health and safety management systems.

Safety and Health Groups

RSSB provides cross-industry governance for industry decisions and activities in many areas. The System Safety Risk Group promotes collaboration on safety issues aligned to the risk areas described in the industry’s safety strategy ‘Leading Health and Safety on Britain’s Railway’. The Rail Wellbeing Alliance and its subgroups coordinate a variety of health activities across the industry, so that legal requirements, cost benefits, and better health provision within organisations can be universally achieved.

Fatigue and Alertness
Managing fatigue is everybody’s responsibility. Our aim is to make sure that everyone, at all levels, understands their role in managing fatigue. Based on our research and consultation with the rail industry, we have put together a range of resources to help with this.
Freight Derailment
Information about the cross-industry group set up to explore the reasons why freight wagons derail, in particular when due to interactions of track, vehicle and offset load.
Health and Wellbeing
We can achieve greater business and industry benefits by working together on health and wellbeing. Find out how the industry is coming together through the industry roadmap, topic specific groups, health and wellbeing data and many other areas of development.
Human Factors
Human factors is concerned with optimising human performance. In rail, it considers work environments from a human-centred point of view by studying how the whole system influences the way people behave and interact with the railway.
Managing Occupational Road Risk
Road risk, the results of a road traffic incident, will result in costs. And worse, can cause casualties and fatalities. Between 2009 and 2019 ten rail workforce fatalities were the result of road traffic accidents. That's half of all fatalities in that period.
Platform Train Interface
To help manage the risk to passengers at the Platform Train Interface (PTI) we have put together a range of resources. Topics include; passenger behaviour, risk assessments and many more.
Rail Risk Toolkit
Information and tools to enable industry benchmark performance and provide support in formulating safety policies, plans and measures.
Safety Management Systems
Here we provide tools, guidance and expertise to help you develop your Safety Management System. This guidance is for those who need to put in place arrangements for managing health and safety, or those who have a responsibility for overseeing the arrangements.
Signals Passed at Danger Reports and Data
Access charts and summary tables that provide the industry with a variety of SPAD related data to better understand the context within which SPAD events are occurring.
Trespass and Suicide
The strategy aims to deliver a continuous sustainable reduction in trespass and suicide. Find out how better data, communication, partnerships, training, technology, and public awareness will work towards this goal.

RSSB training courses

We offer training courses to help with the professional development of rail employees and make a positive impact on your business. Courses cover topics related to risk reductions, increased productivity, health and wellbeing, and so on.
