RIS-3440-TOM Iss 3
Operation of Heritage Trains
Synopsis
This document sets out requirements for managing the planning and operation of heritage train services on the GB mainline railway.
Summary Of Changes
RSSB carried out a five-year review of RIS3440TOM with input from the Heritage Trains Risk Group. The review found a need for more guidance on the roles of on-train stewards. New sections in the guidance cover steward duties at stations and on-board trains, including pre-journey briefings and actions during the journey. RSSB also updated the style and references in the standard to align with other current documents.
The updated guidance will help charter train operators comply with The Railways and Other Guided Transport Systems (Safety) Regulations 2006 (ROGS) safety and competency systems. Data from 2022/23 shows that heritage trains caused 10,800,072 minutes of delay. An estimated 0.5% of these were due to loading, PTI, or other incidents. Improved stewarding guidance and training could reduce these delays saving £1,350,025 over five years.
