This document sets out requirements and responsibilities for the assessment of gauging compatibility and of stepping distances between rolling stock and infrastructure.

The requirements in GERT8273 Assessment of Compatibility of Rolling Stock and Infrastructure - Gauging and Stepping Distances did not meet the criteria to be National Technical Rules (NTRs) so GERT8273 was converted to a Rail Industry Standard. This document is now presented with rationale and supporting guidance. 

Non-NTRs from GMRT2173 Size of Vehicles and Position of Equipment, and relevant guidance – Parts 2 – 4, Part 8, Clauses 13.6, 13.8 – from GEGN8573 Guidance on Gauging and Platform Stepping Distances have been included in this document.

29/11/2023 - RST SC approved 12m review recommendation for a point release at its meeting in October 2023.
