Monitoring is often considered as the first step in an air quality improvement campaign, as it is important to fully understand the existing air quality baseline before determining where and what mitigation measures need to be in place.
Unlike other transport sectors, which have extensive monitoring networks in place, there has been limited air quality monitoring within the rail sector. Therefore, as part of the CLEAR programme, RSSB has developed a programme of monitoring at representative locations to determine the current baseline of air quality within rail.
