  • railway employees - including ORR inspectors, BTP Officers and those conducting investigations - driving to and from their usual place of work to the railway environment
  • contractors driving to and from the railway environment
  • taxis services for railway employees at work

The progress we’re making

We’re encouraging commitment and collaboration on risk-reduction measures
We have developed the Occupational Road Risk Management Charter in collaboration with RSSB and National Highways, which has already been signed by the MDs/CEOs of all freight operating companies.

We’re developing a matrix to measure progress
With support from EMR, GWR and DB Cargo, we’re developing a Risk Management Maturity Model (RM3) Evidence Matrix to measure occupational road risk management maturity, capability, and effectiveness. Learn more about the RM3.

We’re pushing for more reliable performance data
In a bid to improve the reliability of road risk safety performance data, we’ve submitted a proposal to the SMIS Advisory Group to revise the SMIS reporting criteria. This change would see the inclusion of pedestrians/members of the public injured by rail industry road vehicles.

Last updated: 27/07/2022. Read our 2021/22 Occupational road risk management report for more on how we are improving safety in this area.
