Tom Waghorn
Tom Waghorn is a Senior Rail Operations Specialist.
How did you get into this role?
“I’m a lifelong railway enthusiast, having held roles at heritage outfits since the young age of nine. My first professional railway role was as a roster clerk for signallers. I then became a signaller and shift manager myself. Later, wishing for a new challenge, I was encouraged to apply for the role I’m in now.”
Why RSSB?
“RSSB allows me to engage with a wide range of experts within the industry to work toward the common goal of a better railway.”
What do you most enjoy about your current role?
“I enjoy the variety of subjects I can get involved with, and working with a vast selection of industry experts. I’m also helping those on the front line engage with RSSB.”
What are your possible career opportunities?
“Working closely with professional heads of standards and safety in other organisations gives me the necessary experience and networking opportunities to move into similar roles in those companies. Or I might look outside to take my operational experience to targeted projects.”
What skills have you developed at RSSB?
“My public speaking skills have certainly improved. As a signaller, I relied on my safety-critical communication skills, but at RSSB, I need to communicate much greater changes to a wider audience through public speaking or writing.”
Key achievements or career highlights at RSSB?
“I’m most proud of my first project with RSSB: writing a new industry standard for route proving. As a relative newbie to the role, it was a daunting task! It’s satisfying to now see the industry operate these trains according to the new standard."
