Aerodynamics GB Working Group

14/07/2025
The Aerodynamics GB Working Group focuses on various aspects of aerodynamics within GB rail. This includes aerodynamics in the open air and in tunnels, as well as European standards and Technical Specifications for Interoperability.
'The Aerodynamics GB WG deals with all topics in railway aerodynamics and relevant topics in wind engineering. Members of the Aerodynamics GB WG act as GB mirror group to CEN TC256 WG6. It provides a forum for UK rail experts to contribute to, have oversight of, and comment on the standards produced by WG6. The mirror group is currently dormant.'

Scope

The scope of the Aerodynamics GB Working Group covers issues relating to aerodynamics, including:

  • all matters of relevance and interest to the rail industry in the field of aerodynamics, including wind and wind loading.
  • acting as the RSSB stakeholder group within the industry to commission and coordinate research and development in aerodynamics.
  • supporting the implementation of aerodynamics in standards through the provision of expert advice.
  • reporting to the Infrastructure Standards Committee and the Rolling Stock Standards Committee.

Minutes of the working group meetings and its outputs are discussed at the Infrastructure Standards Committee, the Rolling Stock Standards Committee, and the Freight Technical Committee. The working group may also report to the Vehicle/Structures System Interface Committee on matters of aerodynamic research.
