Delivering high-value analyses through Data Insights

Featured story
Data Insights (DI) is an analytics capability that was developed at RSSB to perform analysis on key safety risk areas to support the delivery of Leading Health & Safety on Britain’s Railway (LHSBR).  We focus on complex analyses that require the aggregation of multiple large datasets, and the application of AI or machine learning to generate actionable insights.

The Data Insights Directorate was formed in April 2021, and retains a core team of analytic experts who are constantly developing our AI capability, whilst working with RSSB’s rail industry experts to develop new opportunities for leveraging data that could deliver value to our members.

We also engage with our Members during analyses, as they understand the operational context and help us identify which insights are meaningful, and how they can be used to drive improved decision making to deliver benefit.

We’ve analysed a number of topics since our formation including the impact of extreme rainfall on soil cutting failures, and we are also in the process of developing a tool to calculate runaway risk distances for possession planners.

The Data Insights capability is available to RSSB’s Members, and can be engaged via the Risk Groups, the Principal Strategy Implementation Managers, the Engagement Managers, or you can suggest an idea directly to us.
To ensure we continuously deliver the maximum value to industry, we have a governance structure in place which ensures that we focus on those opportunities which can have the greatest impact to our industry, this is chaired by our COO. This process enables the prioritisation of opportunities based on value, industry focus and the effort required to perform the analysis, where value is measured through potential improvements in safety; operational performance; health, safety and wellbeing; savings; and sustainability.
