Podcast highlights: Season 3, Episode 2

Chris Knowles, our Director of System Safety and Health, joined us on the most recent podcast. We explored the importance of reliability and resilience for the UK’s rail system, covering the core challenges and some of our solutions.

Chris kicked off by highlighting how crucial a reliable service is for attracting both passengers and freight operators. 

However, he quickly pointed out that:

  • Extreme weather events are increasingly challenging. 
  • There’s a need to adapt asset management and operational approaches to maintain safety. 
  • There are finite financial resources available.

For Chris, these are the core challenges to reliability and resilience. But how can we help industry overcome them?

How digital solutions help

The conversation moved to the power of digital technology. 

Chris explained how using digital solutions can improve data accuracy and, in turn, the industry’s knowledge base. Examples include using APIs for direct data capture.

He also highlighted our wheelset intervention support tool. This uses predictive analytics and data from wheel impact load detectors to help freight operators prevent disruptions from urgent maintenance needs. 

The potential of AI also came up. Chris talked about the need for adapted assurance approaches, especially in safety-critical applications.

Our commitments

Next, Chris covered some of the commitments in our Annual Business Plan. 

First, he gave an update on the ongoing development of the National CCS DRACAS. He explained that the system has the potential to unlock £231 million in benefits. It will do this by: 

  • improving system performance
  • reducing costs
  • enhancing safety through better information sharing.

Another area of focus Chris touched on was risk modelling for extreme weather. He went over the piloting of PRIMA with Network Rail. 

PRIMA is a decision support tool. It helps operators create speed plans by weighing the immediate risk of an accident against the broader network impact of speed restrictions. This allows for proportionate speed restriction profiles. In turn, this will ensure a safer and higher-performing railway during bad weather.

Making a real difference

Looking ahead, Chris also touched on the work being done to reduce operational incidents, like SPADs and overspeeding. He explained that projects are underway to identify overspeed data sources to enable targeted action. 

Chris also mentioned the update of our cost-benefit analysis guidance and tool. This will help members make informed safety investment decisions that offer value for money.

Collaboration also emerged as a central theme. Chris talked about its vital role in our work, particularly at the interfaces between different parts of the industry. He highlighted, for example, how groups and committees bring together diverse expertise. This often leads to the development of valuable tools and applications.

Future challenges

Finally, Chris outlined some future challenges to reliability and resilience. 

Cybersecurity was identified as a major concern, particularly for operational systems. Understanding asset degradation and optimising maintenance strategies will also be key. 

Lastly, Chris stressed the need to develop future skills within the workforce. The focus should be on: 

  • making the most of digitisation
  • understanding data insights
  • preparing for the railway of tomorrow.
