Rail Leader Update: SPADs, overspeeding and extreme weather
In our safety update, Ann Mills, RSSB’s Deputy Director of System Safety and Health, touches on the rise and highlights the steps the Train Accident Risk Group (TARG) is taking to help industry manage SPAD risk.
Ann explains that TARG has developed a SPAD management guide and self-evaluation tool, which brings together the latest research and know-how on managing SPAD risk. ‘It allows rail organisations to reflect on opportunities to enhance their management practices,’ she says.
Work in this area is also being done by the SPAD Risk Subgroup, which has developed the SPAD Toolbox to increase SPAD awareness and help train drivers easily find the information they need to reduce SPADs. And shortly, the SPAD deep-dive analysis, commissioned by TARG, will be published, providing industry with the insight we’ve gleaned from our investigation into the rise in SPADs during the extreme hot weather this summer.
Ann’s update, which also summarises how the System Safety Risk Group is responding to overspeeding and extreme weather, is part of our new video series, the Rail Leader Update. Through the series, we seek to keep rail leaders abreast of the work we do in collaboration with our cross-industry groups and committees to deliver the support rail organisations need.
Presented by one of our directors, each two-minute video captures the latest developments in safety, health and wellbeing, rail standards, sustainability, and research and innovation – priority areas for RSSB and the wider industry.
