Rail Leader Update: working towards an even greener railway
It’s now four years since the UK government legislated a net-zero emissions target by 2050, mobilising the industry to make rail an even greener mode of transport.
With the government also setting out environmental requirements and targets in the national rail contracts, the message to industry was clear: recent progress has been strong, but there is more work to be done.
Organisations across the industry have been taking action. In an interview for Horizon, RSSB’s new magazine for rail leaders, Claire Mann, MD of South Western Railway, discussed what the TOC is doing to make the railway even more environmentally friendly.
Paul McMahon, Director, Planning and Regulation, Network Rail, did the same in his interview for the magazine. ‘We have a bold environmental strategy to reduce our carbon emissions, improve biodiversity across our land, and we are planning to transition out our vehicle fleet to electric,’ he said.
As with all priority areas for industry, RSSB works closely with cross-industry groups to deliver the support rail organisations need. In this update for rail leaders about sustainability, Angela Cruickshanks, RSSB’s Sustainable Rail Programme Lead, presents what the Sustainable Rail Executive network and its sub-groups are doing. Together, with the support of RSSB’s sustainable development team, we are helping industry achieve the sustainability goals set by government.
The Rail Leader Update video series, launched last year, keeps rail leaders abreast of the work we do in collaboration with our cross-industry groups to help rail organisations meet their strategic priorities.
