Your new SSRG chair: Ellie Burrows

SSRG promotes collaboration across the railways on key risk areas described in the industry’s shared strategy: ‘Leading Health and Safety on Britain’s Railway’ (LHBSR). It reports into the LHSBR Executive Advisory Group and the RSSB Board.
Representatives include chairs of the specialist safety groups which are drawn from Network Rail, passenger and freight train operators, ROSCOs and infrastructure companies, together with representatives from trade unions, ORR, DfT and RSSB experts.
Ellie is Anglia Route Director at Network Rail, and before that was Train Services Director at Southeastern. She is also a Fellow and Deputy Chair of the Chartered Institution of Railway Operators.
Britain’s railways are among the safest in the world, but only because of industry’s constant focus on avoiding complacency and retaining vigilance. By using the right data, research and foresight, interventions can be targeted on the right risks at the right time. While undeniably safe, there are many long-standing and emerging risks which have the potential to cause harm. These can dent rail’s ability to perform for its customers, so policy makers, funders and leaders have to be alert. They need to be informed, engaged and active.
To help with that, we have Leading Health and Safety on Britain’s Railway. This identifies 12 key risk areas where safety and health performance need to be improved. Refreshed in 2020, LHSBR suggests tangible ways to improve and innovate, making railways safer and healthier for all. The key to success is working together and making commitments to achieve future improvements.
Ellie takes over from Steve Murphy, who has been chair of SSRG since 2016.
