Celebrate 200 years of the modern railway

Featured story
For Emma Roberts, programme manager for Railway 200, the cross-sector campaign is a unique opportunity for the industry to celebrate rail’s rich history.

On 26 September 1825, Britain’s first steam-hauled public railway—the Stockton and Darlington—was launched. More than a conveyer of coal, it brought together various elements of engineering and ideas for what a railway could be. ‘It set the DNA for the railway system,’ according to Anthony Coulls of the National Railway Museum.

To mark 200 years of the modern railway, rail organisations will hold celebrations up and down the country. Together we’ll remember rail’s rich history, mark today’s triumphs, and gear up for achieving a more sustainable future.

Speaking of the commemorative events, Emma Roberts says: ‘Coming down the tracks this year is a bumper programme of exciting initiatives and shared storytelling for everyone to get involved with and enjoy.

Railway 200 represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the railway, its people, and its communities to shout long, loud, and proud about rail’s many achievements and plans for a more sustainable future.

‘It will cover the past, present, and future of the railway. As well as showcasing rail’s pioneering pedigree, it will excite and invite more people to consider a career in the railway.’

RSSB adds: ‘We are delighted to be part of our country’s remarkable rail story. With our members, who span the industry, we will continue to celebrate our past and present while we take steps to secure the future of our railway.’
