Enabling Magnetic Track Brakes on GB mainline railway (T1099)

On Britain’s main line railways, trains decelerate using conventional friction brakes, rheostatic/regenerative braking, or a combination of both. In low adhesion conditions, magnetic track brakes (MTB) are used on some light rail systems in the UK and on mainline networks in Europe. The aim of this project was to deliver a detailed feasibility assessment of using MTBs on Great Britain’s mainline rail network, considering application scenarios, technical compatibility and the economic case.
