The effects of railway traffic on embankment stability (T679)

Much of the civil engineering on Britain’s railway network dates back to the Victorian era, and today structures such as embankments carry more and heavier trains than ever before. In the past 20 years, embankment and trackbed deformation has increased, sometimes resulting in failure, with obvious safety and operational implications.
