Course overview

One of the leading causes of long-term sickness absence in the rail industry is mental health. Not having good support measures in place can be costly to employees’ wellbeing and the business. That’s why it is so important for line managers to have access to high quality training on mental health in the workplace.

We have adapted our 1-day face-to-face mental wellbeing training for line managers to a remote delivery. This training is now delivered over 3 days in short 2-hour modules, with a 1-hour follow-up session, a month later.

This course will increase understanding of mental wellbeing and stress. Using rail specific case studies and group exercises, the training will provide line managers with the information they need to better support good mental wellbeing in their teams. This course has been developed to equip line managers with the knowledge and confidence to not just spot signs of those struggling, but also to know what support to offer. You will learn how to discuss mental health, and proactively manage mental health-related absences and return to work.

The course covers preventative measures to keep teams performing well, and practical proactive measures for line managers when supporting a direct report experiencing mental ill-health. This knowledge can be applied in practical day-to-day management of teams and it is compliant with local human resource and occupational health processes.

The course covers five topics which have been identified -through research - as core for line managers in the rail industry:

  1. Mental health awareness
  2. Responding to signs and symptoms of mental ill-health
  3. Communication with staff suffering from mental ill-health
  4. Managing workplace risks associated with poor mental wellbeing
  5. Managing absence and return to work

The course focuses on:

Increasing understanding of:

  • Mental health & stress, and why they’re important to address in the workplace
  • How to nurture mentally healthy teams & manage workplace risks

Improving confidence in:

  • Identifying the signs, symptoms, causes of poor mental health
  • Supporting your direct reports who are experiencing poor mental health
  • Discussing mental health with employees
  • Proactively managing mental health related absence and return to work

This training has been designed by rail industry clinical psychologists and covers psychosocial risk factors experienced by the workforce, grounded in rail specific content. The course was developed following the learning outcomes of rail industry research on effective mental health training for line managers.

Bespoke courses

We recognise that every organisation is different, so we work directly with organisations to develop bespoke courses. Each course is tailored to the delegate group and business requirements. The course can be developed in a modular format to allow for flexible remote delivery to suit your needs. The modular approach will also allow for time between modules to apply the learning and reflect with colleagues and trainers.

If you would like RSSB to deliver this as a bespoke training course, remotely or at a location of your choice, please email, and we will contact you to discuss your exact requirements and how we could tailor the course to your target audience.
