A fundamental requirement of fire safety legislation is the provision of adequate means for giving warning in case of fire and in some cases there is an additional requirement for some form of automatic fire detection. Outside of regulatory controls a fire warning system which can include automatic fire detection, may be provided in accordance with a code of practice or as part of risk management.
